Who invented The Swiss Cheese?
An old that circulated a long time ago said that a merchant travelling through the desert 5000 years ago made the discovery by accident when the milk he was transporting in a bag made of a sheep's stomach reacted with the natural rennet in the stomach lining and was churned into cheese by constant jogging. This is an interesting story. As a result though, this story will cause us to question if the first cheese was really made in Switzerland.
Swiss cheese was mentioned by the first century Roman historian Pliny the Elder, who called it Caseus Helveticus - the "cheese of the Helvetians", one of the tribes living in Switzerland at the time. Since such cheese could be stored for lengthy periods it is not surprising that it soon became part of the basic fare of travellers. It was also known that Napoleon was one of the first few patrons of this cheese. Swiss cheese soon became a valuable trading commodity. By the 18th century it was being sold all over Europe. They were also able to find out that this cheese can be served with many of their favorite dishes. The amazing thing is when they discovered the Swiss Cheese fondue recipe.
Not only is the Swiss Cheese an all-time favorite of people from Europe. Today, almost everyone in the United States buy this cheese in every grocery shopping trip. So why don’t you grab this cheese now. You can get it in the cheese store in you’re your neighborhood or in the gourmet cheese shop online.
